Gartner Magic Quadrant for Corporate Performance Management Suites, What Does it Tell You?

Many think that March Madness is about the NCAA Basketball tournament, but we think that for software vendors in the CPM space March madness is the annual publication of the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Corporate Performance Management Suites.  I would guess Chris Iervolino and John Van Decker (the authors) feel the same way.  Imagine dealing with 20 or so vendors who all think their product(s) are the best in the market (or at least have a strong bias that skews their perspective).  It's not easy and there are a lot of passionate “debates” about what makes one product or vendor better than the other in Ability to Execute or Completeness of Vision.

Like any process, it has its flaws. We believe the biggest complaint from a vendors perspective is that while Gartner has a method and algorithms for determining placement on the Quadrant, vendors are not privy to how those algorithms work and because we all see our own products through rose colored glasses and competitors’ products through a much less flattering lens, we all think we should have placed better.  It's natural byproduct of the process.

Even with the Madness it brings to the month of March, we believe the Magic Quadrant is a valuable tool and an important step in the evaluation process. Just keep in mind that even vendors placed very close to each other can have very different strengths and weakness. That's why I applaud Gartner’s decision last year to also publish the Critical Capabilities for Corporate Performance Management Suites report as a follow up to the Magic Quadrant.  It allows you to compare products based on those criteria that are most important to your business making it much easier to navigate the many options you have.

So, I recommend that you download the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Corporate Performance Management Suites 2015 and also last year's critical capabilities report for more detailed insight.  And if you are interested, we can send you the new version of the critical capabilities as soon as it is published (likely May or June).
