Abstract
When economies are growing quickly companies, governments and
individuals borrow money and spend it in ever increasing amounts,
buoyed by the certainty that the good times will continue forever.
Listen to Gary Simon’s opinion on how companies
and public sector bodies around the world can react on have been
de-leveraging their balance sheets, swapping debt for equity,
conserving cash and increasing working capital.
Managing
the gap between these two extremes requires deft management and
superior systems. Overheads accumulated in good times are difficult to
eliminate, capital projects cannot be switched off mid-stream and
employment legislation reduces the options for shedding labour and the
speed with which this can be achieved.
So tightly managing
cash, forecasting banking facilities, re-working supplier agreements
and staying within banking covenants becomes a critical activity. But getting a firm grip on cash forecasting can be extremely challenging.
It involves several sources of information and few performance
management systems seem to cope with the demands of cash forecasting
without extensive programming.
